PBC 30 years- what’s changed? what’s the same? – EASL 2022 – PODIUM PRESENTATION

PBC Through the Years: Time to Move Ahead

Presenters: David Jones, Collett Thain, Andreas Kremer, Vincenza Calvaruso, Marina Bergenguer

Since 1992, much has changed in the PBC landscape, while much remains the same.  In 1992 there was no UDCA, patients were biopsied annually, cirrhosis was main focus, and disease awareness was low. What has not changed is: AMA and ALP still the bedrock of diagnosis, there remains variable clinician awareness, patients continue to be repeatedly asked about alcohol and there is still no cure.  Much was discussed about PBC patient risk stratification using various tools, like Fibroscan and risk score tools which consider: age, gender and disease stage among other factors. Included in the presentations was a discussion of symptoms and the patient experience as well as highlights from the UK PBC Audit which assessed PBC patient care.
